The HELIX Project has now given the green light for the creation of a full-length canal extension crowned by two magnificent, eagerly anticipated 30 metre high Kelpie sculptures by renowned artist Andy Scott.
Autumn 2009
The new canal at Grangemouth is an integral part of The Helix Project to create a vast eco-park and community greenspace on 300 hectares of unused land between Falkirk and Grangemouth. The project is led by Falkirk Council, the Central Scotland Forest Trust and British Waterways Scotland.
The Kelpies will stand proud beyond the new sea lock on the River Carron and, together, the new sea lock and canal extension will also support the Scottish Government’s aspirations to improve ease of entry to the Forth and Clyde canal from the River Carron.
The iconic Kelpies will not only be a tremendous sight for those sailing along the new canal or visiting the eco park, but they will also help promote the dynamism of the Scottish canal network to those travelling along the M9.
